Rhinoplasty “Nose Job”

If you are unhappy with the appearance of your nose, you may want to consider Rhinoplasty (nose reshaping) surgery. Rhinoplasty can straighten the back of the nose, refine the back and tip, decrease the size of the nostrils or straighten a crooked nose. The more specific your concern about the appearance of your nose, the easier it is for Dr. Miles to develop a surgical plan for your Rhinoplasty.

Dr. Miles performs nose reshaping surgery under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure. He performs open Rhinoplasty with a small incision on the skin between the nostrils which extends along the inside of the top of both nostrils. Sometimes, cartilage from other areas of your body (such as your nasal septum, ear, or, in rare cases, rib cartilage) may be used to help reshape your nose.

Following the procedure, you should rest for the first 24 hours, and sleep on two to three pillows to keep the head elevated. Crushed ice bags should be used to reduce swelling around the face, especially the eyes during the first 24 hours. Discomfort is relieved by oral pain medication. Sometimes, Dr. Miles will pack the nose to support the nose from the inside, this packing is removed on the second day after the procedure. On the 5th day after surgery, the stitches are removed. You may have to wear a splint on the back of your nose for one to two weeks. Most of the bruising is gone by 7-10 days. If you have a desk job, you can return to work after only a few days. Minor residual swelling will resolve over the first year, and final results are considered achieved at one year. For the first week or two, any activity that raises blood pressure should be avoided. Blowing and rubbing the nose should be avoided for one month. After eight weeks, you should be fully recovered.

The specific risks and the suitability of rhinoplasty for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
