Facelift / Neck Lift

If you have lost skin elasticity of the face and neck, you may be a candidate for a facelift (rhytidectomy) or neck lift. If you have jowls along your jawline, deep creases between the base of the nose and the corners of the mouth, facial and neck wrinkles, or loose neck skin, you may want to consider these procedures. They restore a more rested and youthful contour to the face and neck.

Facelifts range from mini to standard, depending on the location and extent of loose skin, and the treatment options are tailored to the individual’s unique circumstances. The facelift procedure is performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia with sedation, or under general anesthesia. Incisions are made along the hair margin above and in front of the ear, extending down hugging the ear contours, and ending at or just behind the ear lobe. A second incision may be placed under the chin to allow for tightening of the neck.

Your head and neck are wrapped in dressings, which are usually removed the next day. Initial discomfort is controlled with oral medication. Sutures are removed within 5 to 7 days. Bruising and swelling decrease to “socially acceptable” levels in 7 to 10 days. The final result of a facelift procedure is evident in 3 to 4 weeks or sooner, with continued improvement for several months.

A facelift is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment.

The specific risks and the suitability of the facelift (rhytidectomy) procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
