Chin Implant
If you have a small or receding chin, you may be a candidate for chin augmentation. A chin that looks too small in comparison with other facial features may make the nose appear longer or too large for the face. Often, during consultation for Rhinoplasty the need for a chin implant is revealed.
Chin augmentation is performed surgically by placing a synthetic implant over the front of the chin bone under the skin and muscle. It is often performed in conjunction with Rhinoplasty to improve the harmony of the facial profile, and the balance between the nose and the chin. Sometimes, a chin implant is placed at the time of a Neck Lift or Facelift to enhance the results of the procedure.
Dr. Miles uses a solid silicone implant to augment the chin. It is usually placed through an incision underneath the chin. It is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia with twilight anesthesia.
You would go home with a small pressure dressing over the chin and a band that supports the neck and chin area, which fastens over the crown of the head. Initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Swelling, tenderness and possible local numbness gradually subside within a month or two. This procedure is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment.
The specific risks and the suitability of this procedure for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are unusual.
