Buttock Lift / Augmentation

Buttock lift plastic surgery procedures add or restores fullness to the buttocks. A buttock lift is usually accomplished through augmentation of the buttocks with silicone implants, or by transferring fat from another part of the body. Many know the latter procedure as “The Brazilian Butt Lift.” With the aging process, most people will lose fullness in the buttocks and experience some degree of drooping (ptosis). Almost all buttocks look more youthful and curvaceous with added volume.

Implant augmentation involves the placement of silicone implants through small incisions near the top of the crease between the buttocks. The implants are placed just on top of the gluteus (buttock) muscles.

Fat transferred from other parts of the body (mainly low back, flanks, abdomen, and thighs) into the buttocks has a survival rate of about 60%. This means that a considerable amount of fat is required for the procedure. In order to be a candidate for fat transfer, you must have a donor site, and usually more than one site, so that the procedure will be worth your while. The fat is harvested by liposuction, giving the extra benefit of being able to contour another area of the body where fat is less desirable. More fat than is actually needed is transferred with the expectation that some volume will be lost in the process of transfer. You will experience some volume loss in the first few weeks as the swelling goes down, and you will not see the final result until a few months after the procedure.

The recovery from buttock augmentation requires two weeks of nothing more than light activity. If fat was transferred, you will feel sore in the areas where liposuction was performed, but you will feel very little discomfort in the buttocks. You will be required to wear a body garment for four weeks after the procedure to compress the liposuction areas so that the skin will shrink and to support the fat transferred areas (buttocks). You can go usually return to work after one week, but it will usually take four to six weeks before you feel completely back to normal. You will be able to sit the day after the procedure, whether you have received implants or fat transfer, but you will need to keep a pillow under the thighs to avoid sitting on the freshly augmented buttocks. It will be six weeks before you may begin exercising again.

During your consultation, you will learn more about the procedure and the risks, benefits, and recovery. If you are considering fat transfer, you will have an exam to determine if you are a good candidate and to decide from which sites the fat will come. Buttock

Enhancement/Augmentation is considered cosmetic and therefore is not covered by insurance. The patient is responsible for payment.

The specific risks and the suitability of buttock enhancement/augmentation for a given individual can be determined only at the time of consultation. All surgical procedures have some degree of risk. Minor complications that do not affect the outcome occur occasionally. Major complications are rare.
