Breast Reduction Surgery
You may be a candidate for breast reduction surgery if you have large heavy breasts, which cause upper back pain and bra strap grooving, sometimes accompanied by rash under the breasts. Some may desire this procedure if they have a large breast size, which they feel is distracting. If your large breasts interfere with normal daily activities or your ability to exercise, you may benefit from breast reduction.
Breast Reduction gives you a smaller breast size as well as a more youthful breast contour. Patients experience significant improvement, if not complete resolution of the complaints related to their overlarge breasts. Many patients also experience a significant increase in self-confidence.
Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia in a surgery center or hospital as an outpatient surgery. Occasionally, older patients are kept in the hospital overnight to ease their recovery from anesthesia. Incisions are placed around the areola, vertically down from the nipple to the fold underneath the breast and along the fold under the breast (an “anchor” pattern). The nipple is elevated to a more youthful position, and excess breast tissue, fat, and skin are removed. Dr. Miles uses a superomedial pedicle to support the nipple in most cases.
The incisions are covered with light dressings, and you will be required to purchase a sports bra after surgery. You must wear the sports bra for 6 weeks. After 48 hours you may Shower. You will receive a prescription to control post-operative discomfort. You will follow up in the office 2-3 days after the procedure, and again at 2 and 6 weeks. Bruising and swelling may require 4-6 weeks to go away. Scars will usually fade in 6 to 12 months.
Breast Reduction is sometimes covered by insurance, depending on the patient’s presentation and individual insurance plan benefits. However, insurance carriers are becoming increasingly difficult with authorization of the procedure. If Dr. Miles feels you may be a candidate for insurance coverage, you will leave your consultation with a letter and photos in hand to mail to your insurance company. Dr. Miles will also submit the letter to your insurance company, but preauthorization is not guaranteed. If the procedure is considered cosmetic, Dr. Miles will provide you with a quote, which includes the surgical facility, anesthesia, and surgeon’s fee.
